Coordinates: 35 ° 20 '  S , 146 ° 16'  O Urana Shire was a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area was 3,357 km² and was the smallest LGA in the state by population with around 1,150 inhabitants. In 2016 it went up with Corowa Shire in the Federation Council .

Urana was located in the region north of the Murray River about 350 km west of the Australian capital Canberra and 380 km northeast of Melbourne . The area comprised 17 hamlets and hamlets: Boonoke North, Boonongo, Cocketgedong, Coonong, Coorabin, Cullivel, Greenvale, Morundah, Oaklands, Rand, Urana, Urana South, Widgiewa, Yuluma and parts of Boree Creek, Bundure and Daysdale. The seat of the Shire Council was in the town of Urana in the center of the LGA east of Lake Urana, where 298 people live today.

The Urana Shire Council had nine members elected by residents of the three wards (three each from Wards A, B, and C). These three districts were defined independently of the localities. The mayor of the council was also recruited from among the councilors.
