Urduja

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Princess Urduja (* around 1350, † around 1400) is an epic warrior princess of the Philippines and heroine of the Pangasinan province . Its name comes from the Sanskrit word "Urja" (breath). She was a noblewoman and probably came from the Maharlika (warrior caste) or Datu (princes) caste . The Moroccan trader Ibn Battuta (* 1304; † 1368 or 1377) mentioned them in the report on his trip from Morocco to China .

Regency

According to Ibn Battuta's reports, he came to Tawalisi after traveling through Sumadra (now Sumatra ) on his way to China . In Tawalisi he met Urduja, ruler of Kaylukari. He reports that Princess Urduja was the daughter of the ruler of Tawalisi, who was also called Tawalisi. This had an armada with which he wanted to take action against the Mongol- occupied China .

In Battuta's accounts, Urduja is portrayed as a female warrior whose forces included both male and female Maharlica . According to Battuta, she is said to have fought in battles and duels with other warriors. He also reports that she swore that she would marry only one man who could defeat her in a duel. But no one risked competing with her in a fight.

She impressed the Moroccan with her military skills and her plan to accompany her troops to India. She surprised him at the same time still, with their Turkish skills and by preparing a banquet Ibn Battuta and his crew and pickled in salt, their garments, rice, two water buffalo and four large barrels ginger, pepper, lemons and mangoes for their trip to China was . It then took Battuta 17 days to get from Tawalisi to China .

Historical research

Jose Rizal suspected that Tawalisi must have been in the northern regions of what is now the Philippines, since Ibn Battuta made the trip to China in just a few days. This also takes Austin Craig to, a historian of the University of the Philippines , he is convinced that in today's Tawalisi Pangasinan must have been lying. He claims that her gifts to Battuta's men are typical of this region and that the Ibaloi, a Filipino ethnic group in the region, have the legend of a Udayan ruler who combines the mountain and valley regions of Pangasinan and the province of Benguet Alliance have united.
