Uricostatic drugs are drugs that inhibit the formation of uric acid in the body and are used for gout and other diseases (e.g. hyperuricemia ).

Active ingredients

Allopurinol and febuxostat are uricostatics.

Mechanism of action

Uricostatic agents inhibit the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which normally catalyzes the formation of uric acid from xanthine or hypoxanthine in the purine metabolism . If xanthine oxidase is inhibited, on the other hand, the precursors of purine metabolism increase. These can be eliminated through the kidneys.

Side effects

Side effects can include a. Gastrointestinal complaints, allergic reactions , blood formation disorders , kidney stone formation , liver damage and polyneuropathy occur.

Taking medication may be a. indicated for gout and hyperuricemia.

Contraindications

Uricostatic drugs should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
