Because his wife Karin wants it that way, the main character Björn Keppler is not going on holiday in Italy with her this year, but is hiking alone with a donkey named Friedhelm through the Uckermark. The donkey often doesn't want to be like Björn, and Björn would rather be somewhere else. After a while Björn gets to know Sabine, whom he calls "the voice". She is also traveling with a donkey called Inge. During a thunderstorm, Björn and Sabine meet a former inmate named Markus, also with a donkey. Meanwhile Björn solves his relationship problems with Karin. At some point Björn buys Friedhelm the donkey. At the end of the story he insists that Karin should also come to the Uckermark.

Reviews

“Actually, I'm a bit allergic to funny vacation books, but Michael Gantenberg's novel" Vacation with Donkey "is really funny. [...] His trip becomes an involuntary self-discovery vacation, because the teacher has not exactly developed into a lovable person in recent years. That is why his marriage is in crisis. Björn is accompanied by the donkey Friedhelm, which seems to be a new trend, with the aim of slowing down. The two meet different people and Björn learns to resolve conflicts. Despite the very entertaining situation comedy , the tone is never sweet, but also makes you think. "

"The self-discovery trip about himself and his marriage - always with a donkey named Friedhelm - has in part something of Hape Kerkeling's search for meaning in" I'll be gone ", contains intelligent little philosophies, many understandable thoughts about relationships and lots of delicious word choices by the author"
