Uronema is a freshwater genus from the green algae group of the Chlorophyceae . It includes a few species.

features

The representatives form unbranched threads from a row of cells. The cells are long cylindrical . The threads are 4 to 10 micrometers in diameter. The end cells of the thread are pointed and often curved. The basal cell of the thread is attached to the substrate with a colorless disc. The cells have a nucleus and a band-shaped chloroplast . This is wall-oriented and has one or more pyrenoids . The growth occurs through cell division in the thread.

The asexual reproduction takes place by the formation of one or more zoospore per cell. Sexual reproduction is unknown.

Occurrence

The representatives of the genus live fixed in standing and flowing waters.

Systematics

The species of the genus Uronema were previously placed in the genus Ulothrix , which they are morphologically very similar in the light microscope . However, they are not closely related, but only differ morphologically in the ultrastructure of the zoospores and in the type of cell division.
