Urs Herzog

Urs Herzog (born June 24, 1942 in Zug ; † September 24, 2015 in Zurich ) was a Swiss German studies scholar .

Life

Urs Herzog studied German, art history and history at the Universities of Zurich and Munich . He did his doctorate in 1968 with Max Wehrli on Jakob Gretser's dramas and then worked as his assistant until 1976. In 1974 he submitted his habilitation on Jacob Baldes Odendichtung and in 1976 was appointed associate professor for German literature from the beginnings to 1700. In 1986 he was promoted to full professor and in 1999 he retired. He focused his research on works of neo-Latin literature and baroque literature , especially the baroque sermon. His brother was the Zug painter and draftsman Josef Herzog (painter) (1939–1998) , who taught from 1967 to 1976 at the Aarau Cantonal School.
