Ursmer Berlière

Ursmer Berlière OSB (born September 3, 1861 in Gosselies , † August 27, 1932 in Maredsous ) was a Belgian priest and church historian .

Life

He attended the Jesuit college in Charleroi and the small seminary in Vellereille-les-Brayeux . He was dressed as a monk of Maredsous Abbey in 1881 and made solemn profession in 1882. From 1883 to 1885 he studied theology and German at the Seckau Abbey . He was ordained a priest on September 18, 1886. He taught for a few years in the abbey school and published his historical research in the Revue Bénédictine .

In 1890 he started the Monasticon belge , a prosopography of Belgian monasticism before 1801, which should eventually comprise 23 volumes. The publication was completed in 1993. From 1902 to 1906 and again from 1922 to 1930 he was director of the Belgian Historical Institute in Rome and from 1912 to 1914 chief curator of the Royal Library of Belgium in Brussels. In 1931 a commemorative publication entitled Hommage à dom Berlière was published in his honor .
