Etymology and history of research

William Lutley Sclater described the weaver bird under the name Ploceus (Symplectes) nicolli . He named Amani in the Tanganyika area as the site . »Ploceus« comes from the Greek words »plokeus, πλοκευς « for »weaver« from »plekō, πλεκω « for »braid, intertwine«. The specific epithet »nicolli« is dedicated to Michael John Nicoll (1880–1925). »Anderseni« was awarded in honor of Thorkild Andersen , the collector of the type specimen of this subspecies.
