Gopuram of the Sundara-Varadaraja-Perumal Temple of Uthiramerur |
Uthiramerur ( Tamil : உத்திரமேரூர் Uttiramērūr [ ˈut̪ːɨɾəˌmeːɾuːr ]; also Uttiramerur, Uttaramerur ) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 25,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
Uthiramerur is located around 80 kilometers southwest of Chennai (Madras) in the Kanchipuram district . The next largest cities are Kanchipuram 28 kilometers north and Chengalpattu 29 kilometers east. Uthiramerur is the capital of the talk Uthiramerur .
Uthiramerur was founded around 750 by the Pallava king Nandivarman II . There are three larger Hindu temples in the city : the Sundara Varadaraja Perumal temple, dedicated to Vishnu , the Subramanya temple, dedicated to Murugan , and the Kailasanatha temple, dedicated to Shiva . The Kailasanatha Temple, which dates back to the Pallava period, had fallen into serious disrepair, but was restored from 2008. In the center of Uthiramerur there is a pillared hall which is known today as the Vaikunta Perumal Temple. Originally it served as a meeting hall for the village assembly. An inscription located here, from the reign of the Chola King Parantaka Chola I around the year 920, gives valuable historical information about the constitution of the village assembly, which at that time administered the place according to a quasi-democratic system.
87 percent of the inhabitants of Uthiramerur are Hindus , 9 percent are Christians and 3 percent are Muslims . The main language, as in all of Tamil Nadu, is Tamil , which is spoken by 94 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
