Utklippan is Sweden's most southeastern archipelago and consists of the islands of Norraskär and Södraskär . It is located in the Baltic Sea about 25 kilometers south of Karlskrona in the municipality of Karlskrona , Blekinge län . The archipelago and the surrounding sea have been a nature reserve since 1988 . There is a lighthouse on Södraskär .

lighthouse

The lighthouse on Södraskär was built in 1840 as a combination of beacon and fortress . Today's lighthouse, a so-called Heidenstam lighthouse (named after the lighthouse designer Gustav von Heidenstam ), was built in 1870 according to plans by Albert Theodor Gellerstedt . The tower has a height of 30.9 meters. The lighthouse was fully automated in 1972. The main lighthouse was closed by the Swedish Maritime Administration in 2008, but there is still a beacon to mark the local sea route.

After the automation of the lighthouse in 1972, the apartments of the former lighthouse keepers became vacant. These are used today by the Karlskrona Ornithological Club.

Nature reserve

Utklippan is used as a stopover by many migratory birds . Most noticeable is the large gull breeding colony .

A large bird and ringing station has been located on the archipelago since 1964 . By 2004, 319,504 birds from 194 species had been ringed on Utklippan.

Endangered species on Utklippan

There are several different species of amphibians on Utklippan . Among others, the natterjack toad and the endangered green toad . In 1994 a large-scale green toad rescue operation began. After it had been established in the previous years that there were predominantly female animals on the island, dozens of males and a few hundred young animals were released there. Many of the animals on the archipelago cannot survive in salt water for long periods of time .

geology

The bedrock of Utklippan consists of granite . During the last ice age , the inland ice left clear traces. Among other things, boulders and abrasions can be seen in the rock.

Water and gravel left some deep holes on Södraskär as a result of washouts. On Noraskär, however, there is a lot of loose rock that is piled up to form small walls on the beach.
