Utricularia asplundii is a carnivorous plant belonging to the genus of water tubes ( Utricularia ). It is native to Colombia and Ecuador .

features

Utricularia asplundii is a perennial and epiphytic , more rarely terrestrial plant of creeping growth. It forms filigree, branched stolons up to 10 cm long and 0.5–1.0 mm thick. At these, tufts of elliptical storage nodules 6–12 mm long appear. The stalked leaves appear individually or in pairs from each stem base. The many-nerved, about 0.25 mm thick lamina is elliptical, leathery and has a pointed to slightly rounded tip. It reaches a length of 4–16 cm and a width of 1–1.2 cm. The total length of the foliage is about 8-16 cm with stems. The entire plant is covered with cylindrical glands.

The traps appear in large numbers and are mainly located on the submerged stolon branches. They are stalked, spherical and their size varies between 0.8 and 1.3 mm. The opening sits near the base and there is a curved appendage to the left and right of the valve.

The inflorescence grows upright or semi-upright, is of simple construction and unbranched or - in rarer cases - branched. It becomes 15–36 cm long, the stalk is round in cross-section, 0.5–1.0 mm thick and glandular hairs, especially in the upper area. The bracts are fused at their base, narrow-egg-shaped and about 2–6 mm long. One to four flowers appear at regular intervals of about 1–2 cm. The sepals are slightly oval and both about 1.0–1.5 cm long. The corolla is 1.5–2.0 cm long and whitish with a pink border. The upper lip is broadly egg-shaped with a rounded tip, it is only slightly longer than the sepals. The lower lip is broadly wedge-shaped and has a yellowish double spot near the throat , from which parallel, magenta stripes emanate . The tip of the lower lip is deeply cut and three-lobed, each lobe has a rounded tip. All of the petals have tiny, glandular eyelashes on their edges. The flower spur is cone-shaped, tapering to a point, strongly curved from the middle towards the front and covered with glandular eyelashes on the outside.

The seed capsules are egg-shaped, their length is approx. 7 mm; the capsule walls have a membrane-like structure. The seeds are cylindrical and about 0.7 mm in size.

Distribution and habitat

Utricularia asplundii is native to the tropical rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador. There it grows in damp moss cushions on trees at altitudes between 150 and 1500 m, often associated with Utricularia jamesoniana .

Systematics

Utricularia asplundii is assigned to the Orchidioides section .
