The Utterån is a river in Sweden and one of the three headwaters of the Moälven . It is 45 kilometers long and has a catchment area of 459 square kilometers. It rises in Stor-Uttersjön , about three kilometers north of Innertällmo . From there it flows in a south-easterly direction through the village of Gålberget , where it bends south and flows through the Uttersjön at the village of Uttersjö . A few kilometers downstream, on the right bank of the river, the almost equally large Hädanbergsån flows into the Utterån, which rises from Översjön , which is five kilometers south of Stor-Uttersjön . From here the river flows south, sometimes with meandering sections. Finally it falls down the Sågfallet and flows into the Moälven at Gottne .
Above today's Sågfallet, north of the town of Gottne, there were the Gottneforsen and several small reservoirs that were built for rafting in the nineteenth century. During the particularly high spring flood of 1868, these basins were completely emptied so that they would not break; this created a natural wall made of tree trunks at Gottneforsen. The level of Utterån rose dramatically, the banks eroded, and the river paved a new path: the Sågfallet was formed. This 13 meter high waterfall was an insurmountable obstacle for salmon and other migratory fish, they could no longer come to their spawning grounds in the upper reaches of Utterån.
