ʻUvea (sometimes also called Wallis ) is an approximately 76 km² large island in the South Pacific , which forms the kingdom of Uvea with the surrounding islands . Together with some smaller islets and coral reefs, it forms the archipelago of the Wallis Islands . Uvea belongs politically to the French overseas territory Wallis and Futuna , geographically to Polynesia .
There are currently 8342 inhabitants on ʻUvea (as of 2018). In the northeast of the island is Mata-Utu, the capital of Wallis and Futuna.
