The Horn Islands (also Hoorn Islands or Futuna Islands ) are a little in the South Pacific west-southwest of Samoa and northeast of the Fiji Islands located, politically to the French overseas territory of Wallis and Futuna belonging, archipelago . Geographically, the islands belong to Polynesia .
The group is made up of the islands of Futuna , the main island with an area of 46 km² , and the smaller island of Alofi (about 18 km²) to the southeast and some offshore reefs . The total land area of the Horn Islands is 64 km².
population
In 2013 there were 3,612 people living on Futuna. The neighboring island of Alofi is used by the islanders to grow coconuts , exotic fruits and vegetables and is mostly only inhabited seasonally (a permanent resident in 2013). The total population of the archipelago has since fallen to 3220 inhabitants (2018).
history
- 1616 - Futuna and Alofi are discovered in May 1616 by the Dutch Jacob Le Maire and Willem Cornelisz Schouten , who named the islands the Horn ( Dutch: Hoorn ) islands in honor of the home port of their expedition, Hoorn .
- 1768 - The archipelago is "rediscovered" by the French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville ; he calls her "Futuna - the lost child of the Pacific".
- 1887 - Several Polynesian kings in the South Seas, including the King of Sigave, sign a protectorate treaty with France .
- 1961 - Following a referendum, the Horn Islands and the Wallis Islands become a (partially) autonomous French overseas territory . The area was given the name "Wallis-et-Futuna", which is still used today.
