Uwe Schimank

Uwe Schimank (born August 5, 1955 in Bielefeld ) is a German sociologist who expanded Luhmann's system theory to include the actor perspective.

Schimank completed his habilitation in 1994 at the University of Bielefeld and in 1994 and 1995/1996 took on substitute professorships at the University of Mannheim and the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . From 1996 to 2009 he was professor of sociology at the Distance University of Hagen . Before that, he worked at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (Cologne) from 1985 . He has been Professor of Sociological Theory at the University of Bremen since October 2009 . In 2014 he was elected to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences .

His main research interests are: modern sociological theories of society , in particular the combination of system and actor theory approaches; Theories of social differentiation; sociological present day diagnoses; special sociologies: sociology of science , sociology of sport , sociology of mass media .
