Völkner or Voelkner is a German family name .

Origin and meaning

The family name Völkner originated from the weak genitive form Volken (derived from Volko or another nickname with Volk- , e.g. Volkmar ) and the suffix -er indicating affiliation or ancestry . The family name is most widespread in Central Germany and formerly in Western Pomerania , West Prussia and East Prussia . The family name has been attested since the first half of the 12th century by Octavian Völkner from Poland , who went down in the history of Vienna as the first master builder of St. Stephen's Cathedral .
