Vøringsfossen is a waterfall in Norway . The height of fall is 183 m, the largest free fall distance of the water 145 m. The waterfall is on the western edge of the Hardangervidda in Eidfjord not far from the Rv 7, which connects Oslo with Bergen . When the snow melts in spring, the amount of water can be more than 150 cubic meters per second. In 1980 the river was regulated for power generation, which means that significant amounts of water are no longer visible.
The small river Bjoreio , in the course of which the Vøringsfossen lies, is dammed above the waterfall in the Sysendalen valley by the Sysendamm and used for electricity production. The amount of water is therefore limited, but for tourist reasons it is increased in the summer from June 1st to September 15th to around 12 m³ of water per second, which roughly corresponds to the natural flow rate.
