GeekNet, Inc. is a US software company . Geeknet has been a subsidiary of GameStop since 2015 .

history

The company was founded in 1993 under the name VA Research by the two Stanford -Students James Vera and Larry Augustin to powerful Linux PCs as an alternative to far more expensive Unix - workstations to sell. In the first few years, the company's sales grew steadily, and in 1998 exceeded the US $ 100 million mark.

In April 1999, VA Research took over its biggest competitor, Linux Hardware Solutions , and changed its name to VA Linux .

The company's IPO on December 9, 1999 was the most successful of all time, as the share price rose from $ 30 to $ 320 from start of trading, and closed at $ 239.25 at the end of trading. However, this course was not held for long. Just one year later, after the dot-com bubble burst , the share price was below the issue price, and has only fluctuated around 13-15 dollars since then.

In February 2000, Andover.net was purchased (later known as the Open Source Developers Network and Open Source Technology Group ). This acquisition added Slashdot and other software news sites to VA Linux and added a strong software development focus to the company's business model.

Due to the growing competition from other hardware vendors, who were now also selling PCs with pre-installed Linux, and the associated losses, VA Linux decided to leave the hardware business in June 2001 and concentrate only on software and websites. In December 2001 the name was therefore changed to VA Software .

From May 2007 the company was called SourceForge, Inc. , and in November 2009 it was renamed GeekNet, Inc.

In September 2012, Slashdot, SourceForge, and Freecode were sold to Dice Holdings for $ 20 million.

In 2015, Geeknet was acquired by GameStop .
