Chip factory Frankfurt (Oder)
The chip factory Frankfurt (Oder) ( Communicant Semiconductor Technologies AG ) was a major project of the Brandenburg state government, which finally failed in autumn 2003. Originally, the state government wanted to exploit a technology developed in the Frankfurt Institute for Semiconductor Physics (IHP) and in this way create jobs in the region.
The chip factory was one of the successors to the Frankfurt (Oder) semiconductor plant (HFO). Intel and a major Arab investor (DAFZA = Dubai Airport Freezone Authority ) have been won over by the state government as partners for a foundry . Frankfurt (Oder) was an attractive location because of the existing well-trained staff and above all because of the proximity of the IHP, where the decisive technology had been developed. The project ultimately failed because a federal guarantee to secure the debt was not made.
In November 2006, the Hamburg solar energy company Conergy bought the building and set up a production facility for solar cells and modules for around 1000 employees. At the beginning of 2009, around 450 people were employed there in a four-shift operation.
Frank Geiser ( Geiser & von Oppen ), who was the last member of the board of Communicant Semiconductor Technologies AG to take over the messy situation at the end of 2004 and who saved the location by selling it to Conergy , was able to successfully complete Communicant in the second quarter of 2013 so draw a line under the chapter of the "chip factory".
