The VEB Steremat (later with the name affix " Hermann Schlimme ") was located on the site of the former Agfa company complex on Jordanstrasse in Berlin-Alt-Treptow after the Second World War . At times, production was also taken over in the event of capacity bottlenecks in the manufacture of portable radios (Stern Contura) and cassette devices (R4100) from Stern Radio Berlin .

In addition to civilian products, VEB Steremat also manufactured equipment for military and secret service tasks at the Strausberg production site near Berlin. This included u. a. the cipher T-310/50 , which was used by the ZCO (Central Cipher Organ of the GDR) for the cipher services of the GDR's communications system, such as B. the Ministry for State Security, Main Department III, Headquarters Enlightenment Department N, the National People's Army, Kominatbetriebe as well as state and social organizations ( SED , FDJ , FDGB ), was commissioned.

The company was dissolved in 1990 by the Treuhandanstalt .

Several companies emerged from VEB Steremat between 1990 and 1991, including Steremat Elektrowärme GmbH, Steremat Employment Company mbH , Steremat AFS GmbH , Steremat CompART GmbH , STEREMAT Immobilien Verwaltungs und Vertriebs GmbH and Steremat Galvanic & Lackierung . Some of the 2000 employees were still employed in these companies. The company Steremat Induktion GmbH holds the naming rights of the Steremat brand.
