VIA K8M series
The VIA K8M series (VIA K8Mxxx) from VIA Technologies is a family of chipsets for PC motherboards . These chipsets are suitable for processors from Advanced Micro Devices with HyperTransport interface ( AMD K8 ) and generally have an integrated graphics core ( IGP ).
Naming
The notebook version is prefixed with the prefix KN instead of KM. Otherwise these chipsets are identical, so a separate consideration is not necessary.
The K8M series stands in the tradition of the VIA KM series and continues these chipsets for a new processor platform. The names are based heavily on the VIA K8T series , but there are a few differences in detail.
technology
Since the memory controller of the AMD K8 processors is integrated directly in the processor and one of the main functions of the northbridge is omitted, the northbridge of the VIA K8T series is basically nothing more than a combination of HyperTransport-to-AGP-Bridge or HyperTransport-to -PCIe-Bridge and HyperTransport-to-VLink-Bridge with an additional integrated graphics core.
Southbridges
To be precise, K8Mxxx is the marketing name for the Northbridge of the chipset. Since all VIA Southbridges from the VT8231 can be combined with all VIA Northbridges from the KT266 or P4X266 through V-Link , it is not possible to determine exactly which Northbridge is combined with which Southbridge . However, the VT8237 / VT8237R + or VT8237A are mainly used for the K8T chipsets. A few motherboards have the VT8251. The reason for this lies in the long delay of the VT8251.
Models
K8M800 / K8N800 (A)
The K8M800 is the sister model of the VIA K8T800 and offers its equipment in combination with an integrated UniChrome Pro graphics core. The K8N800 is the mobile version of the K8M800. A special feature is the K8N800A , which is an improved version of the K8N800 and supports the stutter mode of the AMD Turion 64 , so that the power-saving mechanisms of the AMD mobile processors can be optimally used.
K8M890 / K8N890
The K8M890 is the sister model of the VIA K8T890 and the further development of the K8M800. Since the K8M890 came onto the market much later than the K8T890, it does not have the bug from its first revisions. The K8M890 also uses the Chrome9 HC graphics core for the first time. The K8N890 is again the mobile version, but it has the stutter mode right from the start .
