Silicon Integrated Systems ( SiS ) is a Taiwanese company that develops many types of ICs such as controller chips for Ethernet , WLAN and S-ATA as well as SoCs . For a long time SiS was mainly known as a manufacturer of chipsets for PCs . In the past, graphics chips were also developed, but this division was spun off as XGI Technology Inc.

history

SiS was founded in February 1987 in Taiwan . In 1990 the company introduced its first chipset for the 80386 . In 1992 a branch was opened in the USA , which was closed again in early 2008. SiS has been officially listed on the Taiwanese stock exchange since August 1997 . In June 2003 the graphics division was spun off as XGI Technology Inc.

SiS was founded as a fabless company, but at the end of the 1990s the company built its own production facility in Taiwan. After various disputes with UMC , they took control of SiS at the beginning of 2003 and forced the sale of the new plant to UMC. Since then, SiS has been operating as a fabless company again.

In August 2011 SiS announced that it would give up its business with PC chipsets and focus on chips for TV sets, multimedia set-top boxes and touchscreen devices in the future.
