The United Microelectronics Corporation ( UMC , Chinese 聯華電子 , Pinyin Lián Huá Diànzǐ ), listed on the New York Stock Exchange : UMC, and Taipei stock exchange . No. 2303) was on 22 May 1980 as the first Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer founded.
The company produces ICs for other companies without their own manufacturing capacities ( fabless ) such as B. ATI Technologies or EMC . With 2010 sales of approximately $ 4.34 billion, it was the second largest foundry in the world after TSMC . The headquarters and most of the semiconductor factories are located in Hsinchu , Taiwan . The two most modern factories that can process 300 mm wafers are located in Tainan (Taiwan) and Singapore .
In the 1990s, UMC sold 80486 processors named UMC Green CPU .
In 2003 UMC took control of the Taiwanese company Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS), which mainly manufactures chipsets .
