Hua Tuo ( Chinese  華佗  /  华陀 , Pinyin Huá Tuó ; † 220 ) was a famous Chinese doctor at the time of the Eastern Han Dynasty . He is said to have been the first doctor to use anesthesia during an operation .

The composition of the narcotic , known as mafeisan ( 麻 沸 散 ) , that he used is unknown.

Hua Tuo was also one of the first doctors to suggest gymnastics as a healing method. He developed the movement system "Art of the Five Animals" ( Wu Qin Xi ), which the patient had to imitate: tiger , deer , bear , monkey and crane .

He was introduced by Dong Xi to the warlord Sun Ce , whose general Zhou Tai was badly injured while rescuing Sun Quan . Using drugs , Hua Tuo was able to cure the general and save his life within a month.

He later also healed the legendary General Guan Yu , who was hit by an arrow poisoned by Pang De at the Battle of Fancheng . Hua Tuo allegedly scraped the poison from Guan Yu's bones while he was playing with counselor Ma Liang Go . Hua Tuo was rewarded with a rich banquet and 100 ounces of gold .

He later treated Cao Cao , who suffered from a terrible headache. Hua Tuo discovered a brain tumor and prepared to remove it, but Cao Cao suspected a trap. The doctor Ji Ping once tried to open his skull, which was part of Dong Cheng's murder plan . Cao Cao had Hua Tuo detained and sentenced to death . Tradition has it that the doctor gave a guard his medicine book before his execution . However, the watchman's wife is said to have burned the book for fear of sorcery, and so only two pages have survived.

Hua Tuo's name is often used synonymously for “miracle healer” (神醫) in China.
