Paul U. Innocence

Paul Ulrich Unschuld (born August 19, 1943 in Lauban ) is a German sinologist and medical historian who primarily deals with the history of Chinese medicine and science.

Life

Paul Unschuld received his PhD in Sinology in 1971 and a Master of Public Health in 1974 . From 1975 to 1984 he taught at the School of Hygiene and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , Maryland, most recently as Visiting Associate Professor. From 1986 to 2006 he was full professor and director of the Institute for the History of Medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Since 2006 he has been Professor and Director of the Horst Görtz Foundation Institute for Theory, History and Ethics of Chinese Life Sciences (HGI) at the Charité in Berlin .

The Volkswagen Foundation granted him around 450,000 euros for the translation of the book Bencao gangmu .

In 2007, Innocent, one of the best experts on Chinese medical history and early Chinese specialist literature, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.
