VIA KN series
The VIA KN series (VIA KNxxx) from VIA Technologies is a family of chipsets for PC motherboards . These chipsets are suitable for mobile processors from Advanced Micro Devices with EV6 bus protocol and generally have an integrated graphics core ( IGP ).
Naming
The KN series is the mobile version of the KM series , but differs significantly from the sister models in some cases. The naming is still based on that of the VIA KT series , but there are a few differences.
Southbridges
To be precise, KNxxx is the marketing name for the Northbridge of the chipset. Since all VIA Southbridges from the VT8231 can be combined with all VIA Northbridges from the KT266 or P4X266 through V-Link , it is not possible to determine exactly which Northbridge is combined with which Southbridge . Of course, due to the development over time and the desired equipment features on the part of the mainboard manufacturer, there are certain preferences in the combinations:
- KN133 + 82C686B
- KN266 + VT8233
- KN400 + VT8237
Models
KN133
The KN133 is the first chipset with a Twister-K graphics core (integrated S3 Savage4 graphics core) and is heavily based on the VIA KT133A . Like this one, it offers support for PC-133 memory and an FSB of 133 MHz.
KN266
The KN266 offers support for DDR-SDRAM of the types PC-1600 / DDR-200 and PC-2100 / DDR-266. In addition, the integrated graphics core has been improved and now consists of the ProSavageDDR graphics core. In addition, analogous to the KT266, it has V-Link as a connection type to the Southbridge .
KN400
The KN400 is a mix of KM400 and KM400A , optimized for notebooks. It therefore has the support of an FSB of 166 MHz and supports max. PC-3200 / DDR-400 memory. A UniChrome graphics core is also used as the graphics core .
