Volume Table Of Contents

The (less often the ) Volume Table Of Contents ( VTOC ) is the table of contents of a DASD volume. For each dataset, the VTOC contains the physical position of the individual extents as well as metadata such as file format, creation, access and expiry dates.
The VTOC corresponds to the tape header ( data carrier label) for tape data carriers .
