VVVVVV is a Jump 'n' Run - Computer game the Irish, living in England independent game developer Terry Cavanagh. It was developed entirely in Adobe Flash and released on January 11, 2010 for Windows and macOS , and on May 30, 2014 for iOS and Android . VVVVVV is a cross-genre mix of a puzzle game and a platform game , in which the player controls the protagonist space captain Viridian, who ends up in a parallel dimension at the beginning of the game and then goes in search of his crew members. The character cannot jump like in other games of skill, but canreversethe direction of gravity .

description

action

Captain Viridian must dodge the green spirit and reach the other side of the abyss. The C symbol represents a checkpoint.

An incident occurs on the spaceship of the protagonist Captain Viridian due to dimensional interference. The crew can initially save themselves through a teleporter on board, but the crew members are separated from each other, so that Captain Viridian finds himself alone. As the captain of the spaceship, he makes it his business to find all team members and to find out the reason for the disturbances.

Gameplay

Atypical for a jump-n-run game, the player in VVVVVV is not able to jump. Instead, he can change the direction of gravity by pressing a button / touch so that the game figure falls either up or down. In this way, the obstacles that stand in Captain Viridian's path can be overcome. Such obstacles include spikes that kill Viridian when touched, or objects that fly around and must be avoided. The level of difficulty increases gradually over the course of the game and new game elements are introduced over and over again. The player is often under time or reaction pressure. It is common that a comparatively large number of attempts are required for individual passages, since the character often dies. In order to counteract the frustration that may result from this, the developer has placed numerous checkpoints at which the protagonist is revived .

The game is operated entirely with the keyboard / touchscreen. The player only needs four buttons - the two direction buttons left and right as well as an action button (by default the space bar), with which the gravity is reversed, and the enter button to operate devices that are in the level.

graphic

The graphic style of VVVVVV is based on old Commodore 64 classics and, with its minimalist representation, gives the impression of a retro game . The font is the original of the C64 text mode. Cavanagh said in an interview that he is not particularly good at graphic design, which is why he at least tries to make his games look interesting.

Soundtrack

The Swede Magnus Pålsson provided the official soundtrack for the game. It contains fast, electronic chip tune music and was also published for sale on the composer's website under the title PPPPPP .

History of origin

VVVVVV is Cavanagh's first game to be sold commercially. He says that in his eyes it is an advantage of flash games not to have to force the players to pay for the game, but to be able to finance it through sponsors. Because of the size of the game, however, he was forced to publish the game for sale. Regarding game design, Cavanagh said he wanted to make games that were like the C64 games he grew up with. Cavanagh first mentioned VVVVVV in June 2009 on his blog Distractionware . He wrote at the time that he had already been working on it for two weeks and did not want to take much longer than another two weeks to complete it. In the following weeks he kept the readers of his blog up to date on the progress of the project with further screenshots and explanations of the gameplay and status of development.

Cavanagh had previously quit his job at a bank to develop the game, despite not having accumulated enough reserves to support himself. He therefore called for donations for his innovative game on his website and was supported by numerous donors - after the first week he had already received $ 1,000 in donations.
