The Vaalser Hügelland is a natural sub-unit ( natural area of the fifth order) in the urban area of Aachen, urban district Laurensberg . It forms the subunit 561.3 in the main unit Aachener Hügelland (561), which is part of the Vennvorland ( main unit group 56 ). The Vaalser Hügelland is part of a cross-border natural area, sometimes referred to as the Aachen-Limburger Hügelland. The eponymous municipality of Vaals is already in the Dutch province of Limburg. The name Vaalser Hügelland is not common for the Dutch part, the landscape is called Heuvelland (German: Hügelland).

To the south and east of the Vaals hill country, the Aachen hill country, with the Aachen valley basin (561.1) in the west, connects. To the northeast lies the (western) Jülich Börde . The highest mountain in the Vaals hill country is the Schneeberg with a height of 256.5 m. The Vaals hill country is traversed by the Senserbach and the upper reaches of the torrent .

The Vaals hill country is made up of loamy-clay soils from Cretaceous sedimentary rocks . In contrast to the Aachen Forest to the south , it is hardly ever forested, but rather used for agriculture, especially as grassland , for example in the rural-rural area of Orsbach . The stored Orsbach Forest is now a nature reserve.
