The carotid vagina is a sheath of connective tissue in the neck area that contains various structures running through the neck , which are summarized under the term vascular nerve cord of the neck .

The carotid sheath has a close relationship to pretracheal layer of cervical fascia and is connected to the intermediate tendon of the musculus omohyoideus grown. This can use this connection to exert a pull on the internal jugular vein , in which there is a negative pressure in order to keep it open.

The intercarotica fascia extends between the two carotid vaginae and separates the retropharyngeal space from the interfascial praevertebral space (danger space).

course

The carotid vagina begins at the upper thoracic aperture medial to the pleural dome and is laterally adjacent to the peripharyngeal space in the neck . The carotid vagina lies dorsally on the spine . Seen from the outside, the carotid vagina runs under the carotid triangle, among other things .

content

In addition to the already mentioned internal jugular vein, the carotid vagina also contains the common carotid artery or, further above, the internal carotid artery , the vagus nerve and sometimes the superior radix of the deep ansa cervicalis .
