history

Balzer Peter Vahl (1718–1792) became a first-class merchant and citizen of Greifswald on April 18, 1744 . Later he was the mayor there.

In addition to several daughters, his marriage resulted in his sons Gottfried Michael (1748–1811) and Balzer Peter (1755–1825), ennobled in 1794. Balzer Peter von Vahl (the younger) was a Greifswald councilor, businessman and landowner. In 1809 he bought the Gahlkow estate from the von Lühmann family's bankruptcy estate.

His son Carl von Vahl († 1843) took over the estate. The possessions Stilow and Brünzow (as indicated by Balzer Peter) are not recorded. Carl von Vahl had 3 children, Ludwig, Hermann and Caroline († 1862).

After Carl's death, Ludwig took over the estate. Hermann von Vahl (1826-1892) was a district judge in Greifswald, he and his sister renounced the estate in favor of Ludwig. Ludwig von Vahl was probably a successful landlord, because around 1859 he was able to acquire the estate in Klein Zastrow, southwest of Greifswald. His family was counted among the 10 largest landowners in the Stralsund administrative district in 1876.

The von Vahl were members of the corporate district council of the district of Greifswald. In the district house, the coats of arms of 24 landlords and 3 cities hung in a coat of arms frieze, including that of Vahl.

Von Vahl auf Klein Zastrow (no first name has been passed down) became a co-founder and director of the Gützkower starch factory in 1906. In 1912, after a long struggle, he pushed through the extension of the GJK small railway line from Behrenhoff to Klein Zastrow. In 1931 the Klein Zastrow estate went bankrupt during the Great Depression.
