Vaišelga

Vaišelga (also: Vojselk, Vaisvilkas) († December 9, 1268 ) was the son of Mindaugas and his wife Morta Mindaugienė , Grand Duke of Lithuania between 1264 and his abdication in 1267.

Life

He was an Orthodox monk who had to take power due to the murder of his father Mindaugas . Thanks to his sister's marriage to the Galician prince Švarno (1255), he had the backing to take over his father's throne. His cousin and adversary Treniota was murdered in the spring of 1264. His other opponent, Daumantas († 1299) was driven to Pskov in 1265 .

Then Vaisalga resigned in 1267 in favor of Prince Švarno and went back to the monastery. There he was murdered soon afterwards, probably at the instigation of Švarno's brother Lev († 1301). Švarno also died in 1269/70 and so Traidenis (also: Trojden, † around 1282) became the new Grand Duke of Lithuania for a decade.
