biography

The “School of Ancient Translations” ( Nyingma ) emerged from the first translation period of Tibetan Buddhism ( Vajrayana ) . Vairocana was among the first seven monks to be ordained in Tibet and he was sent to India to study with the Dzogchen master Sri Singha . He thus became a disciple of Master and became not only an important translator and teacher of the Nyingma tradition, but also an important Dzogchen teacher in the Tibetan Bon tradition. Sri Singha entrusted Vairocana with the task of teaching the "mind class" (tib .: sems sde ) and the "space class" (tib .: klong sde ) of Dzogchen in Tibet. Along with Padmasambhava and Vimalamitra, he was one of the three masters who introduced the teachings of Dzogchen to Tibet.

The most important students of Vairocana were Yudra Nyingpo, Sangtön Yeshe Lama, Pang Sangye Gönpo, Jnana Kumara of Nyag and the noblewoman Yeshe Drönma . One of the particularly well-known students was Pang Gen Mipham Gönpo, whose students realized the so-called “rainbow body” over seven generations by using the oral instruction Dorje Sampa (Tib .: rdo rje zam pa ), the “vajra bridge”. According to the teachings of Dzogchen, when the rainbow body is obtained at the time of death, over a period of seven days, the body of a Dzogchen practitioner dissolves into a kind of light body. According to tradition, only hair and nails should remain as "impure parts of the body". Tsele Natsok Rangdröl, Orgyen Terdag Lingpa Gyurme Dorje, and Jamgön Kongtrul are considered to be incarnations of Vairocana.
