Vaitheeswarankoil is the location of the major Hindu Vaitheeswaran- or Vaidyanatha temple. The approximately four and a half hectare sanctuary has a temple pond and four gopurams (gate towers). In the temple of Vaitheeswarankoil the god Shiva is worshiped as the divine healer Vaitheeswaran (Vaidyanatha). According to belief, Shiva himself is supposed to heal incurable diseases here. Therefore, Vaitheeswarankoil is a popular place of pilgrimage for people suffering from diseases. The temple also has a shrine to Angaraka ( Budha ), the personified planet Mars . This makes Vaitheeswarankoil one of the Navagraha temples , a group of nine temples in the Kaveri Delta, which are dedicated to the heavenly bodies ( Navagrahas ).

97 percent of Vaitheeswarankoil's residents are Hindus . Muslims and Christians only make up just over 1 percent each. As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 98 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
