Sirkali ( Tamil : சீர்காழி Cīrkāḻi [ ˈsiːrkaːɻi ]; also Sirkazhi , previously Anglicized Shiyali ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The population is around 35,000 (2011 census).

Sirkali belongs to the Nagapattinam district of the state of Tamil Nadu and is located around 250 kilometers south of Chennai in the northern part of the Kaveri Delta in the hinterland of the Coromandel Coast . One of the numerous estuaries of the Kaveri River flows past to the south, and the Kollidam , the largest estuary , is around five kilometers to the north . It is twelve kilometers to the coast of the Bay of Bengal . The next largest cities are Chidambaram 20 kilometers north, Mayiladuthurai 22 kilometers southwest and Karaikal 44 kilometers south. Located on the main line from Chennai to Tiruchirappalli , Sirkali has good rail connections. Furthermore, the National Highway 45A, which runs from Viluppuram via Puducherry along the coast to Nagapattinam, runs through Sirkali.

The temple of Sirkali

Sirkali is the location of an important Hindu sanctuary, the Brahmapuriswarar or Sattainathar temple. The name of the temple ("Lord of the city of Brahmas") refers to a myth according to which the god Brahma is said to have worshiped Shiva here. The approximately five and a half hectare temple complex with seven gopurams (gate towers) houses three shrines that are dedicated to three different manifestations of the god Shiva . In the Brahmapuriswarar shrine Shiva is worshiped in the form of a linga , in the Toniappar shrine there is an image of Shiva together with his companion Uma (Parvati), in the Sattainathar shrine Shiva appears as a fearsome Bhairava . The poet saint Sambandar , who was born in Sirkali in the 7th century, is venerated in a side shrine .

In the vicinity of Sirkali are Vaitheeswarankoil , Tiruvenkadu and Keezhperumpallam, three of the nine Navagraha temples , a well-known group of Hindu temples in the Kaveri Delta, which are associated with the heavenly bodies.

87 percent of Sirkali's residents are Hindus , 10 percent are Muslims and 2 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 99 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
