Vala ( Gujarati વલ્લભીપુર ; Hindi वाला ), formerly Vallabhipur, was a small Indian princely state consisting of two parts , which became independent around 1740 and belonged to the Kathiawar Agency of British India during the colonial period . It was located about 21 ° 51 'and 22 ° North and 71 ° 50' and 72 ° 3 'East, with an area of about 281 km², of which 140 were used for agriculture.

history

After Aurangzeb's death , Vala and Loliana fell to Bhausinghji, the founder of Bhavnagar . He enfeoffed Visaji, who was presumably a twin brother of Akherajji, the second ruler of Bhavnagar, with Vala and two other villages.

The colonial rulers classified the little country in the Gohelwar Prant district as 3rd class state (until 1925). Tributes were paid to the Gaekwad , i.e. the Maharaja of Baroda and Junagadh (= Junagarh). After the devastating famines before the turn of the century, the 1901 census found 13,285 residents who paid 225,000 rupees (Rs.) In taxes. The capital of the same name had 4,712 inhabitants. According to official figures, 23 percent of the population died of starvation between 1891 (17019 pop.) And 1902. By 1921, the population in the 40 villages continued to drop to 11,386, who were then burdened with a tax burden of Rs. The country was one of the 12 smaller states that became members of the Chamber of Princes . Under the 1943 plans, Vala was to be forcibly united with Bhavnagar.

It ceased to exist on February 15, 1948 and became part of the state of Saurashtra (now part of Gujarat ).
