Junagadh (also Soruth , Sorath or Saurashtra ) was a princely state of British India in the west of the Kathiawar peninsula in what is now the state of Gujarat . Junagadh was a Rajput state in the Middle Ages , which was incorporated into the Mughal Empire by Akbar I. During the turmoil of the Marathas , the adventurer and soldier of fortune, Muhammad Khan Babi, a Muslim pathane, became the governor ( nawab ) of Junagadh in 1725 . He was followed in 1730 as Nawab by his son Muhammad Sher Khan, who declared himself independent in 1735. The principalities of Radhanpur (1725) and Manavadar (1733) were created through inheritance . 1807–1947 the principality was a British protectorate . In 1941 Junagadh had an area of 8642 km² and 627,000 inhabitants.

After the British withdrew from India (see History of India ), the Muslim Nawab Muhammad Mahabat Khanji III. (1911–1947) on August 15, 1947, the accession of his state to Pakistan , which was accepted by Pakistan on September 15. India protested against this because the state had a majority Hindu population. (In this case, the Indian side argued the other way around than in the case of Kashmir .) The Nawab went into exile in Pakistan on October 24th, and India occupied the country on November 9th. After a referendum on February 25, 1948, the connection to India was completed. Junagadh now became a member of the Union of Saurashtra . On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved and incorporated into the state of Bombay . When Bombay was partitioned on May 1, 1960, the area became part of Gujarat .

Junagadh had a state post with its own stamps from 1864 to 1950.
