Valerios Stais

Valerios Stais ( Greek Βαλέριος Στάης ; * 1857 in Kythira , † 1923 in Athens ) was a Greek archaeologist .

Stais studied medicine and later archeology. In 1887 he became director of the Athens National Archaeological Museum . In this position he undertook numerous excavations in Attica , Epidaurus , Aegina and other sites. For example, he was the first to excavate the Temple of Apollo on Aegina. The Antikythera Mechanism is one of his most significant discoveries .

Stais was a corresponding member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (since 1908) and an honorary member of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies and the Society of Antiquaries of London (since 1919).
