history

The village was first mentioned in 1284 under the name Walkede , while the German-Baltic Gut Valgu was first mentioned in 1529.

From the 15th to the 17th century, Valgu was owned by the noble Fahrensbach family . The last owner was Arndt Heinrich von Fahrensbach . On June 24, 1621 the estate passed to his son-in-law Jürgen von Wrangel . In 1654 the von Lode are named as owners of Valgu, in 1726 the von Budberg , 1780 then the von Staal, 1806 the von Hoyningen-Huene , already 1809 the ownership changes to the Uexküll .

A newer, two-story mansion was built in the 1820s in the classicism style. Six columns support a portico . From 1820 until the Estonian land reform in the 1920s, the estate belonged to the noble Pilar von Pilchau family .

The mansion was burned down by insurgents on December 14, 1905 during the Russian Revolution . It was the first estate in Läänemaa ( Wiek ) to fall victim to the revolutionary turmoil. The building was later rebuilt. A school has been located in the former manor house since 1941.

The historic manor house is surrounded by an eight-hectare park on the right bank of the Velise River ( Velise jõgi ). The estate's historic schnapps distillery with its tall chimney is also located on the river bank .
