The Valle del Bove ( it. For Valley of the Ox ) is a spacious high valley on the southeast slope of the Etna volcano in Sicily . Its valley floor lies in the western part at about 1700  m slm and falls to the east to about 1400  m slm . The diameter of the valley is around 5.5 km in north-south direction and around 7 km in east-west direction, for a total of 35 km².

The Valle del Bove is a complex volcanic caldera that is believed to be the result of several large collapses and explosive eruptions over a period of several 10,000 years. In the course of time, Etna has gradually shifted its volcanic activity from east to west, with the collapse area expanding further and further west. However, erosion with landslides , lahar formations and recent lava flows were also involved in the current morphology of the caldera .

The caldera is open to the east to the smaller Val Calanna . In the west the valley flanks rise steeply towards the summit area of Mount Etna up to 3,300 m. In the south, the caldera is bounded by Monte Zoccolaro ( 1739  m slm ) and the Serra del SalIERTio , an east-west running ridge with a mean height of 1700  m slm . Here the valley slopes are mostly designed as vertical walls.

The Valle del Bove is accessible via the Canalone (della Montagnola), a wide erosion channel through which you can slide almost 600 meters in altitude through the loose ashes into the valley. Another access is possible at the Serra del SalIERTio. There, also through volcanic ashes, you can reach the valley floor relatively comfortably in a small wood over 100 meters in altitude. Because of the poor and sometimes missing marking, the path over the Serra is not recommended, especially in fog or low-hanging clouds, you can quickly lose your bearings and get lost.
