Van Krevelen diagram for various solid fuels

The Van Krevelen diagram is a diagram developed in 1957 by Dirk Willem van Krevelen ( chemist and professor for fuel technology at the TU Delft ) to determine the exploitation potential of oil deposits . The atomic ratio of oxygen (O) to carbon (C) and the ratio of hydrogen (H) to carbon are used to determine the maturity and quality of the petroleum. A distinction can be made between possible origins: algae , lipids ( spores and pollen ) and cellulose . Originally, the diagram based on Seyler's coal characterization shows the historical development of different types of coal via the state of development of the biomass .
