history

Transport bridges and company logo

The Van Nelle company was founded in 1782 as a coffee , tea and tobacco shop . Over time, the family business developed into a factory. After the First World War , the company did not have the space for further expansion at its then headquarters. Therefore, the architectural office Brinkman & Van der Vlugt was commissioned to create a new company headquarters in the Spaanse Polder industrial area. Finally, Leendert van der Vlugt was responsible for the design.

From 1931 to 1990 the now protected office and production facility was the headquarters of the Van Nelle company. When it was completed, it was one of the most innovative and modern factory complexes and a prime example of architectural modernism and international style . The design was characterized by its transparent and filigree facades made of mirror glass and their mushroom-shaped concrete pillars. Light, air and space also played an important role in the design.

Since 1986, it stands as Rijksmonument under monument protection , and on 21 June 2014, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Between 1998 and 2004 the factory was renovated. Since the renovation was completed, the complex has been used as an event location in addition to being used as an office space.
