Van Vleck is an impact crater on the eastern edge of the front of the moon , west of Mare Smythii , northeast of the large Gilbert crater and immediately southeast of Weierstrass . The crater rim is round and little eroded, there are concentric landslides along the inner rim, the crater floor is flat.
The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1976 after the American astronomer John Monroe Van Vleck . Previously, the crater was labeled Gilbert M .
