Vandread ( Jap. ヴァンドレッド , Vandoreddo ) is an anime - television series from the studio GONZO in 2000. The series consists of two seasons. The series was later adapted as a light novel and manga .

action

In the distant future, men and women will live separately on different planets. The planet Mejere is inhabited only by women, the planet Taraak only by men. Hibiki Tokai ( ヒ ビ キ ・ ト カ イ ) lives on Taraak , who as a worker belongs to the lowest class. When he tries to steal a VanGuard combat robot from a battleship, the battleship takes off and Hibiki is discovered. Before he can be punished, the ship is attacked by female pirates. On the verge of defeat, the captain orders the evacuation of the spaceship, only Hibiki, Duelo Mcfile ( ド ゥ エ ロ ・ マ ク フ ァ イ ル ) and Bart Garsus ( バ ー ト ・ ガ ル サ ス ) fail to leave the ship in time. In order to prevent the ship from falling into the hands of the women, the refugees bombard the ship with torpedoes when suddenly the Paksis, the energy core of the men's ship, developed an unexpected life of their own. The Paksis destroys all torpedoes and creates a wormhole, which hurls the men's and women's ships far into space, and the Paksis merges both ships.

Hibiki, Duelo and Bart are soon discovered and captured by the women. Little by little the three manage to win the trust of the team. Hibiki becomes a VanGuard pilot for the Dread Squadrons, Duelo ship's doctor and Bart Navigator.

The ship, which the crew christened Nirwana , sets off for the crew's home planet. On the way there, they are attacked by an unknown enemy. In the fight with this opponent, the crew benefits from the fact that, through the merger of the two ships, the VanGuard from Hibiki and the three Dreads (combat spaceships) from Dita Liebely ( デ ィ ー タ ・ リ ー ベ ラ イ ), Meia Gisborn ( メ イ ア ・ ギ ズ ボ ー ) and ジ ュ ラ ・ ベ ー シ ル ・ エ ル デ ン ) can merge and thus create a VanDread. This has different properties depending on which dreads the VanGuard fuses with. After a while, the crew finds out that the unknown opponents are killing the people in the colonies in order to "harvest" certain parts of their bodies. Eventually it turns out that the harvest ships were sent out by the earth's inhabitants because they need the body parts to survive.

Nirvana is now on its way to its home planet, as they fear that these will also be harvested. After a while, nirvana manages to reach its home system. Once on their respective planets, men and women are accused and imprisoned for living together with the opposite sex, but are able to free themselves again and reach nirvana when the earth's harvest ships attack. In a great battle, the men and women join forces to destroy the harvest ships. In the end, the leaders of both planets decide to send selected groups of men and women to the other planet so that one day men and women can live together normally again.

Light novel

Takeshi Mori, the director of the anime, was also writing a light novel series on Vandread. This consisted of three parts Vandread from July to December 2000 in three volumes, Vandread: The Second Stage from September 2001 to January 2002 in three volumes and Vandread: The Extra Stage in May 2002 in one volume. The light novel volumes appeared before the corresponding anime episodes.

The light novel was published by the publishing house Kadokawa Shoten under the imprint Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko. The cover illustrations or cover pictures are by Kazuya Kuroda and the illustrations within the volumes by Kotetsu Akane .

Manga

The series was later adapted as a manga by Kotetsu Akane, which appeared in Kadokawa Shoten's Dragon Junior magazine . The chapters were later published in three anthologies ( Tankōbon ): Volume 1 was published on December 26, 2000, Volume 2 on September 25, 2001 and the short story volume Vandread Special Stage ( ヴ ァ ン ド レ ッ ド す ぺ し ゃ る す て ー じ , Vandoreddo Supesharu Sutēji ) in March 2003 .

The manga is a spin-off of the series and differs from the series in some details. For example, Hibiki is the only man on the ship in the manga, a fusion of Dita's Vanguard with Hibiki's Dread is possible and Dita's character is less childish. Meia is also the captain of Nirvana and Duelo McFile, Paiway Underberg, Ezra, Gascogne Rheingau and Pyoro do not appear in the manga. Instead, the characters Tenho Farland and Asra Mute appear in the manga .
