Vanvoorstia bennettiana (English name: "Bennett's Seaweed") is an extinct red algae from Australia . The kind epithet honors the Australian naturalist George Bennett .
description
Vanvoorstia bennetiana is a small red alga. It can be distinguished from the other three species of the genus by its small size, the finer-meshed leaves and the reproductive organ structures, the stichidium.
distribution
Vanvoorstia bennettiana was only known from two places. Both are located near Sydney Harbor (also known as Port Jackson ). One location was near the eastern portion of Spectacle Island , where it was discovered between May 1 and May 15, 1855. The second location was a canal between Point Paper and Shark Island , where numerous specimens were collected in 1886.
die out
When it was discovered, Vanvoorstia bennettiana was considered common. Since then, however, Sydney Harbor has been massively changed by human activities, which was mainly noticeable in the increase in the silt level. Fine-meshed types of algae react very sensitively to this type of disturbance because the fine dust clogs the leaves and the light required for photosynthesis no longer reaches the organism.
A search by Arthur Lucas in 1916 was unsuccessful and since this species was only known from two places in the world, it is now considered extinct. The causes were human disturbance, habitat degradation and pollution along the entire New South Wales coast. In 2003 Vanvoorstia bennettiana was added to the list of extinct species by the IUCN .
