William Henry Harvey
William Henry Harvey (born February 5, 1811 in Summerville near Limerick in Ireland, † May 15, 1866 in Torquay in the English county of Devon ) was a professor of botany , algae researcher , draftsman , illustrator and lithographer . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Harv. "
Life
Born the youngest child of a wealthy Quaker businessman, Harvey has been interested in nature research from a young age. At the age of 15 he was already a specialist in algae research. In 1836 he followed his brother to South Africa as a colonial official , but continued his academic work there. He was the first to write a scientific description of the country's flora. On his return in 1844 he got a position at Trinity College in Dublin and was soon appointed professor. In the years 1854-1856 he undertook a large collecting and research trip in Australia. Many new species were discovered by him. In 1857 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
Despite Harvey's critical attitude towards Charles Darwin's theory of evolution , Darwin held him in high regard as a great botanist. Harvey, who was rather reserved in dealing with fellow human beings, was also a great draftsman and illustrator, who himself documented his finds so carefully that the illustrations are still considered exemplary today. Suffering from poor health, Harvey died prematurely of tuberculosis .
