Var (mythology)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Var ( old north Vár , Vör ) is one of the Asinnen in Norse mythology .

Var means "beloved" and is a goddess of marriage and love, which Snorri in the Gylfaginning says she oversees the contracts that spouses make with one another. Snorri was probably erroneously etymologically guided by the Old Icelandic word várar (contracts) . The meaning "beloved" is considered to be certain (cf. Svölnis Var - "Odin's beloved"). She is also one of the servants of the goddess Frigg . She is probably one of the matrons like Snotra , Hlín or Sjöfn .
