The Varada ( Kannada : ವರದಾ ನದಿ , Varada nadi , Sanskrit : वरद) is a 220 km long tributary of Tungabhadra in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka ; it is the longest river that flows exclusively through Karnataka. varadā means something like "virgin", "blessing" or "fulfilling wishes".
course
The Varada rises in a square walled spring basin ( kalyani ) in the mountains of the Western Ghats , about 7 km drive south of the city of Sagar near the village of Thirtha and flows first in a westerly, later in a north and north-easterly direction to its confluence with the Tungabhadra .
function
The river is dammed several times by small dams; its water is used as drinking water and for irrigation.
religion
Many people in Karnataka regard the Varada as a sacred river; its source Thirtha is also known as the "village of holy water". Here, as along the entire course of the river, there are numerous small temples and shrines.
