Sagar or Sagara ( Kannada ಸಾಗರ ) is a city with about 55,000 inhabitants in the southwest Indian state of Karnataka . The historical towns of Ikkeri and Keladi also belong to the municipality ( taluk ) .

Sagar is located in the rainy and wooded Western Ghats on the upper reaches of the Varada River at an altitude of about 600 m above sea level. d. M .; the district capital Shivamogga is located approx. 70 km (driving distance) southeast. The climate is often humid; Rain falls mainly during the monsoon months June to September.

The majority of the Hindi and Kannada speaking population consists of approx. 70% Hindus , approx. 25% Muslims and just under 4% Christians ; Jains , Sikhs and Buddhists are numerically small minorities. The male and female proportions of the population are roughly the same.
economy
The inhabitants of Sagar live largely as artisans, traders and small businesses. In the area, mainly agriculture is practiced, whereby rice is mainly grown, but betel palms and other aromatic plants such as pepper , cinnamon , nutmeg and cloves also play an important role in the economic life of the region.
history
The name of the place goes back to Sadashiva Nayaka (ruled 1530–1566), a ruler of the Keladi dynasty, who had a lake ( sagar ) created here - halfway between the capitals Keladi and Ikkeri .
Attractions
- The most important attraction of the place is dedicated to the regionally revered Hindu deity Marikamba , a goddess equated with Parvati or Durga in later times . The main sanctuary is a pagoda-like wooden temple several meters high .
- Other temples are spread across the city.
Surroundings
- The water and wooded area surrounding the city is rich in natural attractions such as Jog Falls and the smaller Dabbe Falls ; The lakes of Honnemaradu and Holebaagilu as well as the Sharavati Wildlife Sanctuary also deserve attention.
- From a historical point of view, the places Keladi and Ikkeri with their temples built in the 16th century are important.
- Nowadays the modern temple of Sigandur or Sigandooru plays a significant role in the religious life of the region.
