The betel palms ( Areca ) or areca palms are a genus of plants in the palm family (Arecaceae).
description
The betel palms grow as single-stemmed pinnate palms. Depending on the species, they can reach heights of up to 30 meters.
distribution
The home of the representatives of the genus of the betel palm is in tropical Southeast Asia ; their distribution area extends from Malaysia to the islands of the Solomon Islands , northeast to the Philippines , south to northern Australia .
use
The roughly chicken egg-sized red fruits of the best-known representative of the genus, the betel nut palm ( Areca catechu ), are used as luxury foods in Asia and Oceania , but are also very toxic.
From cleaned and pressed leaves of the betel palm, dimensionally stable objects such as disposable tableware can be formed, which is marketed as palm leaf tableware .
Systematics
In the genus of betel palms ( Areca ) about 50 species are distinguished.
